About Us

Spojnia Credit Union (SCU) is a state-chartered, not-for-profit, full-service financial institution that is member-owned and controlled through a board of directors. The voluntary board, elected by the membership, establishes and revises the credit union’s policies and sets dividend rates so that you can earn more when you save and pay less when you borrow.

Located at 1006 Pittston Avenue in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Spojnia Credit Union was organized on October 18, 1974 with the specific purpose of helping the members, church groups, associations and societies of the Polish National Alliance. (Formerly Polish National Union of America)

The Polish National Alliance also known as PNA, is a not-for-profit fraternal benefit society which provides life insurance protection, annuities, retirement plans and numerous fraternal benefits to its membership. www.pna-znp.org

However, one thing that has not changed is the basic philosophy envisioned by our founding fathers – that of “People Helping People.”

It is our intent to support our membership by providing courteous service through simple delivery methods that offer attractively priced financial products. We take pride in helping our members to prosper in the ever-changing economic environment in which we live.

What is a Credit Union?

A credit union is a not-for-profit cooperative association that offers a variety of personal financial products and services exclusively for their members. People who join a credit union are eligible to do so because they share a “common bond,” such as a place of employment, organization, or church group.

The origin of credit unions dates back to mid-19th century Europe. At that time, a group of local farmers pooled their resources to purchase supplies at a lower cost. They also agreed to place their excess earnings during periods of good harvest in a common account. In return, participants could borrow from the common account at low interest rates during periods of poor harvest.

In the early 1900s, this credit union concept of “People Helping People” was introduced to the United States by Edward Filene, a Boston merchant. The first United States credit union was established in 1909 in New Hampshire and is still in operation. Today there are over 11,000 credit unions in the U.S. serving the financial needs of over 87 million members.
